Plan & Layout

Start by determining your property lines. Contact your local utility company to mark underground lines before digging. Measure the total length and mark post locations every 6-8 feet. Check local zoning laws and HOA regulations for height restrictions and setback requirements.

💡 Tip: Call 811 at least 3 days before digging to have utilities marked for free.
2

Set Posts

Dig post holes 8-10 inches wide and 30-36 inches deep (below frost line). Add 4-6 inches of gravel for drainage. Set posts plumb using a level, brace temporarily, and pour concrete mix. Allow concrete to cure for 24-48 hours before proceeding.

💡 Tip: Use a string line to ensure all posts are aligned perfectly straight.
3

Attach Rails

Once posts are set, attach 2x4 rails horizontally between posts. Standard privacy fences use 3 rails: top, middle, and bottom. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting and use exterior-grade screws. Ensure rails are level and spaced evenly.

💡 Tip: Space rails so pickets cover joints for a seamless look.
4

Install Pickets

Start from one corner and attach pickets vertically to the rails. Use a level every few pickets to maintain alignment. For privacy fences, overlap pickets or use a board-on-board style. Maintain consistent spacing (usually 1/8 inch) between pickets.

💡 Tip: Use spacers to ensure consistent gaps between pickets.
5

Finish & Maintain

Install post caps for a finished look and to prevent water penetration. Apply stain or sealant to protect wood from weather. Inspect annually and touch up as needed. For vinyl fences, simply wash with soap and water as needed.

💡 Tip: Stain or seal within 30-60 days of installation for best protection.
